Trahearne & Malyck Sketch | October 17, 2025

Monochromatic drawing with Trahearne and Malyck from Guild Wars 2. Accent colors for both characters' eyes - glowing orange for Trahearne, glowing cyan for Malyck. Malyck leans against Trahearne's shoulder. Sketched them again yesterday in-between waiting for commission feedback! I’m so happy I started drawing with lines again this year. I have to admit that before this year, most of the time I found line drawing one of the less enjoyable parts for me. Which is a bit peculiar, as I loved drawing when I first started art – pencil drawing was my favorite for many years.

This year has felt like rediscovering all those aspects about drawing which made me fall in love with art in the first place. I haven’t spent time enjoying drawing lines for so long – before now, it was a necessary step, not my favorite one. Which is why I was very surprised when I recently realized the line step has become my favorite part about drawing comic pages.

I think part of it was also doing those occasional pencil drawings this year. I truly forgot how pleasurable it is to use a mechanical pencil for more than jotting down loose concepts. Before February, I can’t even recall the last time I sat down and tried making a pencil drawing look presentable. I’d been so separate from physical media for so long, that I marveled at the control of the graphite, the texture of the paper, dealing with brushing away those eraser bits without smudging the drawing. All those parts about drawing which sound pretentious to describe, but which are difficult to explain its appeal otherwise.

Slightly wider crop of the previous drawing, where we can see both characters' fingers are intertwined. Anyway, that is to say, both this drawing and the previous one are results from using an opacity brush to sketch with again (meaning a brush with pressure sensitivity). I haven’t used one for doing line sketches/drawing for a few months. Before now, it tended to be a crutch for me – it made me take too long with squirrelly, indecisive lines I was never satisfied with. That’s partially why I switched to sketching with a hard brush for the past few months (meaning a brush without pressure sensitivity), both in the comic pages and in sketches. It’s probably easiest seen in the Diarmid drawing from August. That line drawing, in particular – even though the line portion is only a rough sketch – it turned out much stronger than my line drawings or sketches usually do. The idea is described more clearly, because having that hard brush forces me to make a decision with where to place the line. It prevents me from endlessly deliberating, as I tended to do when using brushes with pressure sensitivity.

I’m essentially describing the advantages many artists have described in advocating for sketching with ink versus pencil in physical media. (Though of course, digital has the significant difference of being able to easily erase – even when you “ink,”)

I’ve briefly tried ink sketching before in physical media – it’s very enjoyable, but my results were always mixed. Which made me unable to overcome the sense that I was just wasting paper. This is the main reason I didn’t persist with it.

This is becoming more rambling than I intended – the point I meant to jot down here is, I began sketching with an opacity brush again because I was trying to recreate the feeling I enjoyed so much when doing the Trahearne pencil drawing from the other day. I really loved the process of drawing that one. The strange thing about using opacity brushes digitally is, that “squirreliness” which always plagued me in digital line drawings – it wasn’t happening in these pencil drawings (or, it was at least happening less). I’m not sure why. I suspect it’s a combination of physical having more “permanence,” which perhaps forces me to be more decisive. Practicing sketching with the hard brush over the past few months likely also helped.

After using the hard brush to sketch, sketching with an opacity brush again felt so strange! In a good way. This time, it seems easier to be more decisive. And I think I am better avoiding that “squirreliness,” while also adding the benefits you gain from having pressure sensitivity available to you.

I’ll have to continue doing experiments with both types of sketching!

Anatomy Practice / Lorcan WIP | August 12, 2025

Edit August 13, 2025: Added the fullbody WIP composition!

In-progress drawing of a shirtless sylvari holding an oversized hammer.
Anatomy practice / Lorcan WIP | Lorcan with the “Onus” hammer skin

Anatomy practice! I’ve been practicing drawing anatomy construction from imagination this year, and this is one of those practices. So, please forgive me for any anatomical inaccuracies, as these are for practicing this type of anatomy construction drawing from imagination.

I’ve been having fun running around in the “Untamed” build for my ranger, which I never knew how fun a spec it is to play (mainly because of the amazing vocal lines Brandon Bales recorded for it, haha – but also the main “unleashed” hammer skill is so fun and satisfying!). It gives me an excuse to finally use my favorite hammer skin – “Onus” – which I’ve never used before because I haven’t enjoyed hammer skills on any character prior. I believe it is also a Halloween skin – so perhaps hopefully I can finish this drawing by this Halloween!

Here’s the full composition:

I also figured out a better way to draw chains with this drawing – when I’ve drawn chains for commissions before, I made a chain brush. I was too lazy to find or recreate that brush again for this drawing, and this time I just drew them manually – but surprisingly, this ended up being both quicker than when I used to use that brush, and I also like the visual result more. I remember the chain brush I made always had this uncanny “too even” appearance, which I then had to spend time making the links look more organic.

With just drawing them with a regular round brush now, it naturally lends itself to an organic feel. (Of course, perhaps now it might be not even enough. Though between the two, my personal preference is a little too organic versus too inorganic or stiff).

And a few extra/earlier versions in the rest of the post below:

Sketchpage | February 12, 2025

A few recent sketches of Corveil and Kurt I just wanted to post for myself. :) With Corveil, I was trying out some hairstyle options for him. I started with a longer hairstyle (which you can see in the top-left initial sketch), because while shorter hair probably suits his character better, I tend to lengthen his hair when I draw him purely because longer hair tends to be more fun for me to draw, haha. I was also doodling one of his outfits here, that I’d been fiddling with in other sketches. I think I semi-recently added the orange ribbon around his waist, at the time of sketching this. With Kurt, I think I just wanted to draw the tails of his jacket (this sketchpage is from the end of December, a little while ago now).

One thing I want to try and do more this year is post a little more about my characters – I’m not sure if it’s a recent thing or if I’ve always been a little like this, but I’m always reticent about sharing info about them for some reason. I think I’m just a bit that way in general – I struggle a bit with preferring to mostly keep to myself. Which is probably why social media has never felt natural to me. But, I shouldn’t have to be concerned about things like that when it’s my own space here on this blog. :) I think this place is a good way for me to unlearn some probably-unhelpful practices I picked up from mainly using social media for sharing art over the past few years, instead of my own space. (In hindsight, I probably should have been doing both, instead of one or the other.) Mainly to try and be a little less guarded here when it comes to expressing myself, because I have never been entirely comfortable doing so on social media. I’m not sure the reason, maybe because it feels more public. I could probably do a Duskbirds page exploring this issue, haha. Well, I don’t think the reason is too important. Probably something that’s mostly in my mind, and likely not noticeable outside my overthinking.

Arquel, Corveil, Vaknaa, & Kurt Sketch Paintings

Crop from an Arquel painting I think might be fun to finish.

Corveil in his fancy new parka. This was mainly an excuse to try out the design.

Corveil in his parka with the hood up.

Arquel practice.

Crop from an Arquel painting I was fiddling with. For whatever reason, I seem to tend to draw the face from this angle when sketching aimlessly.

More experimenting with Corveil’s color scheme.

I was also experimenting with Vaknaa’s color scheme a bit – her original eyes were a dark blue-green color. I was trying out amber eyes with her for a while, and am now pretty settled on giving those to Corveil instead. I was then trying out a more mint color for Vaknaa, but am leaning toward her original darker blue-green coloration again.

This is a paintover of an old Kurt sketch from a few years ago. (It might even be in the archives of this sketchblog, but I couldn’t find it on a cursory search. Which reminds me how I need to improve the search results display for this blog, haha.)

I was curious to see if painting over such an old sketch would have any interesting results, or if it would look noticeably different with my current painting style/skills versus years back. I was expecting disastrous results – but to my surprise, the paintover was an improvement from the original painting.
