“Avatar of Mordremoth” Concept (GW2 Fan Art) | September 14, 2025

Concept drawing of a fan-design for the "Avatar of Mordremoth" from Guild Wars 2.I meant to post this at some point, and why not now. This is one of the concept drawings I did for the “Avatar of Mordremoth” we see in Chapter 1 of “The Harbinger’s Path” GW2 fan comic, seen most prominently on page 13 in Chapter 1: The Firstborn’s Stand. I drew one or two concept designs before this, and remember not being satisfied with those earlier attempts, until drawing this one.

I sketched the pages for chapter 1 first, and did placeholder drawings for my fan-version of the “Avatar of Mordremoth” in the early drafts. I believe I tried to figure out a design on the page initially, but wasn’t pleased with the results I was drawing. This caused me to try concepting some ideas for how this “mind-avatar” for Mordremoth might look like in the comic.

I knew I wanted him to be a foil for the Pale Tree – who Mordremoth initially impersonates during his infiltration into Trahearne’s mind in my comic. I am also partial to the idea – inspired by the Mordremoth canon design that Mordremoth “is the jungle” – that Mordremoth might take different forms for his “mind-avatar.” This is why I wanted him to first appear to Trahearne as the “Pale Tree” – as a way to try and weaken Trahearne’s resolve, by wearing the image of what is almost a deity figure for the sylvari people. This is also why, to me, my design for this version of the “Avatar of Mordremoth” is not necessarily the “final” or “true” form of him (within the lore of my fan comic).

This form, since I wanted to try a version which is more directly opposed to the Pale Tree design-wise, clearly takes much of its inspiration from the Pale Tree’s design herself. Many aspects are similar. I tried to add more malevolent features, influenced from Carlyn Lim’s Mordrem Commander concept designs, as well (mentioned in this post from last month). I will admit some of my drive to try this design is also because I found the canon design for the “Avatar of Mordremoth” in-game to be somewhat comical, haha, and always thought it would be fun to see different takes on this design that are a bit less goofy, and have a bit more of that dark fantasy visual flavor that I love so much in Carlyn’s Mordrem concepts.

Blademaster Diarmid Rough Drawing | August 21, 2025

Rough painting of Diarmid from Guild Wars 2.

The base drawing.

I’ve always wanted to do a study of Blademaster Diarmid from Heart of Thorns, because Carlyn Lim’s designs from this expansion are some of my favorite artworks from the Guild Wars franchise. Her concept designs for the “Nightmare Commanders” – which became the “Mordrem Commanders” in the live game – are some of the most inspirational designs from this expansion for me. They still stimulate my imagination for what the story for the underlying characters might have been! (Had they not been cut for time from the narrative!)

Anatomy Practice / Lorcan WIP | August 12, 2025

Edit August 13, 2025: Added the fullbody WIP composition!

In-progress drawing of a shirtless sylvari holding an oversized hammer.
Anatomy practice / Lorcan WIP | Lorcan with the “Onus” hammer skin

Anatomy practice! I’ve been practicing drawing anatomy construction from imagination this year, and this is one of those practices. So, please forgive me for any anatomical inaccuracies, as these are for practicing this type of anatomy construction drawing from imagination.

I’ve been having fun running around in the “Untamed” build for my ranger, which I never knew how fun a spec it is to play (mainly because of the amazing vocal lines Brandon Bales recorded for it, haha – but also the main “unleashed” hammer skill is so fun and satisfying!). It gives me an excuse to finally use my favorite hammer skin – “Onus” – which I’ve never used before because I haven’t enjoyed hammer skills on any character prior. I believe it is also a Halloween skin – so perhaps hopefully I can finish this drawing by this Halloween!

Here’s the full composition:

I also figured out a better way to draw chains with this drawing – when I’ve drawn chains for commissions before, I made a chain brush. I was too lazy to find or recreate that brush again for this drawing, and this time I just drew them manually – but surprisingly, this ended up being both quicker than when I used to use that brush, and I also like the visual result more. I remember the chain brush I made always had this uncanny “too even” appearance, which I then had to spend time making the links look more organic.

With just drawing them with a regular round brush now, it naturally lends itself to an organic feel. (Of course, perhaps now it might be not even enough. Though between the two, my personal preference is a little too organic versus too inorganic or stiff).

And a few extra/earlier versions in the rest of the post below:

Landis Animation Test | August 11, 2025

2d animation of a sylvari necromancer smirking and winking at the camera. He has a green color palette with faintly glowing eyes. Another silly animation test/practice. This is a small crop from a painting of my sylvari reaper I started a while ago, and it’s been on my back-burner to finish it sometime – dug it up today to practice more with Krita’s timeline/animating with frames instead, haha.

Caydren Paintover | August 4, 2025

Side-profile painting of a Nightmare Court sylvari elementalist from Guild Wars 2. He has long, bare branches for hair, and a red bioluminescent glow. He wields a "Fiery Greatword" over his far shoulder.
“Spellweaver Caydren” | 2025 paintover of a 2017 painting.

Felt like doing another “paintover” practice of one of my older paintings as a warm-up today – which I inevitably spent more time on than I intended. I wouldn’t consider this a “finished” painting, but I’d considered it “finished” as far as its intended practice. :D

This is my “spellweaver” Nightmare Court sylvari from Guild Wars 2, who is one of the main characters from my not-yet-released “Nightmare’s Embrace” project (a future short comic, separate from The Harbinger’s Path Trahearne & Malyck comic). His loyalty to Nightmare is what the quote refers to – like Cadeyrn before him, he believes Nightmare represents the “true” nature of all sylvari, and that the Dream is a corrupting force separating all sylvari from their true selves.
