“Mr. Leon Kennedy.” 

I drew this in July, shortly after my partner & I finished our first playthrough of “Resident Evil: Requiem.” Not only was this the first RE game I played, it’s both the first horror and shooter game I’ve ever played! While I grew up playing games and have always loved them, I tended toward RPG’s, simulations, and action-adventure games. I was never drawn to shooters or horror games, which makes me want to share how I made my foray into this game (and subsequently RE2r, and just starting RE3r last night!).

Because I’d never played this type of game before, I didn’t quite know what to expect. I expected to die a lot, which I did – but what I didn’t expect is how impressed I was by how well the sequences after you’re defeated are animated. It almost felt like you were being rewarded with a little bonus clip to console you. They are like miniature scenes from a well-crafted horror movie – delightful. That’s the inspiration behind this drawing, which if you’re familiar with the game, you can hopefully guess which sequence I saw a lot of and was defeated several times by. Haha! 

Sometime within the past 1-2 years or so, I happened upon the art of Skelesass (their Bluesky | Tumblr | Ko-fi). I love the expressive quality and draftsmanship of their drawings, though I’m not the most familiar with the IP’s they draw fanworks for. I’d been enjoying their art for a while, when I remarked to my partner how I liked “this RE artist,” and they replied asking if I played Resident Evil. I said I hadn’t, and how I thought it a bit funny I knew nothing about these characters, but that I’d started becoming familiar with a few of their designs through Skelesass’s art. My partner was amused by this, to the extent that when they saw Resident Evil: Requiem during this past “Summer Sale,” they bought it for us to play together.

My partner had only played the original RE4 years ago, and I’ve never played any horror games, including RE. I hadn’t planned on playing RE9 (“Requiem”), but because I had mentioned Skeleass’s artwork to them a few times, they had asked me if I would play an RE game. I said I was open to it, mainly because I did become intrigued about the series because Skeleass is clearly so passionate about it. That made me wonder about the games that inspired so much of their artwork of it. 

We ended up really enjoying the game together! My partner even saw that apparently a bundle of RE games went on sale afterward, so we have since played the RE2 remake (twice!), and have just begun RE3’s remake last night (Jill and Carlos have already grown on me!).

I’m a bit torn between the color and lineart versions, as well as the versions with and without the blood effects.

Above is a version with stronger blood effects. This was the version of the drawing I ended up with at the end, before trying out a slightly toned-down version at the top of this post. I’m not sure which of these works best!
