The Harbinger’s Path at Manga Ichiba this Fanime 2026

Happy New Year! I hope your year is starting off well.

I have exciting news! Earlier this month, I learned I was accepted into Manga Ichiba at Fanime this year, the first-ever doujinshi-focused (“indie fan comics”) event for NA.

I applied with The Harbinger’s Path, and I’m pleased to announce I will be self-publishing a very limited print run of my “Trahearne-Malyck doujinshi” comic for this event. It will include all 3 completed chapters (50+ pages), and I hope to also add some bonus material for this print version. (More about this to come.)

If you’d like to learn more, I’ll be sharing more info through email updates. You can receive them by joining here.

Below is an overview:

What is Manga Ichiba?

This is an event officially affiliated with FanimeCon, specifically designed to encourage NA-made indie fan comics (or “doujinshi”).

Fanime’s official description:

“A brand new event is coming to FanimeCon this year! Manga Ichiba is America’s first original English-language doujinshi market.”

More info on their official page here.

Fanime is one of North America’s largest anime conventions – I remember first hearing about it from the artists I followed tabling at it. I was able to visit for the first time a few years ago as an attendee! They have a plethora of events going on, and I had a wonderful time with people I met there. It takes place during May in Northern California for a few days over a weekend.

How is this different from an Artist Alley?

One reason I’m excited about this event is because it aims to be distinct from Fanime’s existing “Artist Alleys.” Today’s Artist Alleys – in general, not only at Fanime – tend to focus primarily on selling commercially. These is nothing wrong with this, but commercial incentivizes tend to push artists toward selling prints and merchandise over doujinshi comics. Doujinshi both take more time to make, and tend to have smaller potential audiences.

Doujinshi has a well-established community in Japan, while this type of community hasn’t historically been as nurtured for NA-made doujin comics. Manga Ichiba hopes this might begin changing this!

Manga Ichiba aims to cultivate more of a doujinshi community in NA by shifting the focus less on commercial selling, and more on encouraging artists who are creating doujinshi comics primarily out of their love for their fandoms.

What is “Doujinshi?”

You might have seen me refer to “The Harbinger’s Path” as my “Trahearne-Malyck doujinshi” in places since starting this project. Doujinshi is a Japanese term which refers to self-published comics, especially fan comics (but it can also refer to original works).

I have always thought of The Harbinger’s Path this way, but I wasn’t sure how widely-known this term was to western/GW2 audiences. I started also calling it my “fan comic,” in case this was more clear.

Final Note

Quick reminder that this project is entirely fan-made and unofficial, and not sponsored by ArenaNet. If you are affiliated with ArenaNet and have questions or suggestions about The Harbinger’s Path, you are always welcome to reach out!

Malyck-Trahearne Sketch | December 19, 2025

I did this warm-up sketch a few days ago (the b&w one below), and added color today as another quick warm-up. I want to consider doing more warm-ups which add upon previous warm-ups, as I think I’m more personally satisfied with the results. This is also how the 2d animation with the both of them was worked on earlier this year, which makes me think this type of workflow might work for how I draw,

Though, to be fair, I’ve essentially been warming-up this month by making more progress with “The Harbinger’s Path” Chapter 3 pages. Doing line clean-up/refinement, or blocking in rough drafts, seems to be effective for me to work on before doing commission painting.

Maybe I should have made a post for all the “Wintersday Trahearne-Malyck” sketches for this month. :p In fairness, I didn’t foresee I’d do more than the first one with Trahearne holding that candy cane.

Trahearne Wintersday Sketches | December 9, 2025

It's Trahearne licking a candy cane. Loose lineart drawing. Spurred from a conversation with Jasmine on bluesky yesterday where she said, “trahearne is back and he’s santa– 🧑‍🎄” – which gave me a variety of amusing mental images I immediately wished to draw.

This is a warm-up sketch that I might finish another time.

This is 3/4-body in the full composition – putting it in the full post, because I think the shoulder is a little off (this is another anatomy construction practice from imagination drawing). Edit: Updated the 3/4 version it slightly; I guess I’ll leave it without a readmore now, though there are still off things about it – still a sketch/potential WIP).

Edit December 18, 2025

Adding one more. :p

Early Trahearne Paintings | November 27, 2025

Trahearne in Orr, writing down notes on a large stack of papers he has propped against his lap. He's sitting and leaned back along several large coral growths.
“Trahearne in Orr” | Unfinished painting from 2015

Yesterday’s page of The Harbinger’s Path shares similarities with the earliest Trahearne art I ever painted – which made me want to scrounge them up and post here! I probably never posted them on their own to this blog, though they are in the Trahearne & Malyck compilation archive (which as of this post, is a bit out of date/hasn’t been updated for a while).

These were both painted in 2015 – the top one started in August, and the one below November 2. I only know this because I usually include the creation date in the filename, which I’m glad I did here, because otherwise I would have misremembered the bottom drawing as older than the top drawing. They were also both initially WIP’s, but I ended up starting new projects with him instead of finishing these particular ideas (which you can see in that compilation archive – as well as this year’s comic project!).

One of my favorite ways to imagine Trahearne is how his travels and studies in Orr might have gone. This is one of the most interesting aspects of his character, for me, and I think it’s partially because those adventures of his weren’t explored in-depth in the story. Which makes it great fun for us to think about what experiences he might have had!

“Friend and Mentor” | Unfinished painting from 2015

These earlier paintings leaned heavily into his “scholar” background, as from what I remember, this was emphasized more during the sylvari personal story – I started playing the game in 2014, and didn’t play the sylvari personal story for several months afterward – so these drawings are heavily influenced by playing the Zhaitan arc relatively recently.

Additionally, if you recall, Heart of Thorns released October 23, 2015. Which means the first painting was painted before and in anticipation of its launch, and the second after I played the Heart of Thorns story. In the full composition for this second one, Malyck is sitting next to him. They’re also meant to be back in the Grove. I am pretty sure I remember starting this painting as a sort of way to cope with how Heart of Thorns concluded for Trahearne, which is likely why I added the “friend and mentor” title in the filename. :p And likely also how I wished there had been development time to include Malyck in the narrative.
