I watched the Silo S3 finale & -penultimate episodes last Friday, and I loved these episodes so much, I’m still thinking about them days later! Because of that incredible finale (and penultimate episode), I felt very inspired to draw something from the show. I ended up starting with a few sketch thumbnails while figuring out what from the show I most wanted to draw, and the above is the result of this experimentation. This one isn’t a finished painting and is more of another “sketch-painting,” as I drew it mainly for practice, and without a developed idea from the start.
Because of that, this is one of those paintings that I changed my mind a lot while figuring out what I wanted to draw. I was mainly deciding whether I wanted this to be more line-focused or painting-focused. This caused the process to be quite messy, and less straightforward – which I think is represented better by a process gif instead of stills for this one:
I didn’t have a developed idea from the start, which is also what makes this more of “sketchpainting” instead of what I would consider a more finished or polished work. It’s also why the background composition is a bit lazy – I had Ashley Zukerman, the actor for Daniel Keene, in mind while drawing this – but this is one of those recall + construction practices, so I was drawing this from memory & imagination, and not from reference. (At least, for the figure – I did look up reference for the Pez dispenser!) The painting probably doesn’t resemble the actor very closely, which is alright because that isn’t the purpose of this study for me – it’s to see what the result would be if I tried drawing from memory, to practice my form and construction skills!
But because I was drawing from memory and imagination, I figured the character from the show might not be the most recognizable. I wanted to add some narrative representations from the show – the helix and center pillar of the silo are inspired by the show’s intro (which I love very much!). And, the Pez dispenser is an important object from the show. I hoped adding these would help convey who the character is, and which series he is from.
The beginning thumbnails were sketching out a few ideas soon after finishing the season 3 finale last Friday. I wasn’t sure what I wanted to draw at first – I’ve loved the show for a few years at this point, but I’ve never tried drawing fanart for it before now. I started by sketching the tree (which I read may be a kudzu plant?) from the show, and then ended up sketching the character from the S3 finale which most struck me.
